Program Structure, Content and Requirements

Beginning and Length of the Program

The Bachelor's in English and American Studies is designed as a three-year, full-time course of study. It begins every winter semester in October and spans six semesters. Students may concurrently take a minor in another subject. More information on the application process and deadline can be found here.
 

Modules

A major in English and American Studies includes the following modules:

  • Foundations of Linguistics
  • Foundations of Literary Studies
  • Foundations of Cultural Studies
  • Advanced Linguistics
  • Advanced Literary Studies
  • Advanced Cultural Studies
  • One of the following:
    • Specialization in Linguistics
    • Specialization in Literary Studies
  • Foundations of Grammar and Writing
  • Basic Oral Language Practice
  • Advanced Language Practice
  • Extension of Knowledge

ECTS Credits

Credit points in this program are allocated based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). ECTS was introduced Europe-wide in order to offer compatibility and mobility between academic programs at different institutes of higher education across the continent.

In total, 120 ECTS credits must be accumulated for the successful completion of a major in English and American Studies.

 

General Education Requirements (Ergänzungsbereich)

In addition to the courses required for this subject, all bachelor’s students must fulfill the general education requirements in order to earn their B.A. This includes a minimum of 8 ECTS credits from professional skills (BOK) courses offered by the Center for Soft Skills (ZfS), and the rest (12–22 ECTS credits) from other faculties or departments.
