Minor in English and American Studies

Learning Objectives

Language skills complement every field of study. If you are enrolled in another faculty or department, consider a minor in English and American Studies.

This minor provides graduates with the essentials of a liberal arts education, including critical knowledge in the fields of English language, literature and culture. In addition to communication skills and near-native competence in spoken and written English, this program exposes students to fundamental topics in linguistics (e.g. syntax, morphology, semantics, pragmatics, phonology, phonetics, EFL teaching, first and second language acquisition, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics) and British and North American literature, including its historical and cultural background. Moreover, students will gain analytical skills as well as research skills, and become familiar with linguistic and/or literary and cultural developments related to the English-speaking world. Depending on their specialization, students will deepen their knowledge of either linguistics or literature after the fourth semester.
