Living in Freiburg

          Martinstor

Freiburg: one of Germany's most attractive cities

Located in the scenic Southwestern region of Germany, Freiburg not only ranks most highly among Germany's sunniest cities, it also has a reputation for the prosperity and high quality of life enjoyed by its residents. Merely a stone's throw away from neighbouring France and Switzerland, travel to these countries is fast and easy. Whether by car or train, a trip to France or Switzerland is just 30-45 minutes away. Paris is even closer to Freiburg than Berlin, and Zurich closer than Frankfurt! Lake Constance is also quite near.

Freiburg: a student-friendly university townKGI-KGIV

To date Freiburg and its outlying areas have a population of approximately 200,000, nearly 30,000 of which are students! Due to its excellent, affordable transportation system, its more than adequate accommodation of bicyclist and pedestrian traffic as well as its green areas, Freiburg is especially deserving of its reputation as a student-friendly city. Beyond that, the Black Forest city has a wide range of local pubs, bars and cafes, and offers a great variety of recreational activities.
Founded by Archduke Albrecht in 1457, the University of Freiburg is one of the oldest German universities and is now one of the nation’s leading research and teaching institutions. Particularly with respect to its academic programmes in English Linguistics and Literature Studies, the University of Freiburg has received superior ratings in all areas of evaluation. (The current ranking is available on the Centre for Higher Education Development's website).

Freiburg: a rich city history

Even today the name of the Zähringen district, located on the northern outskirts of Freiburg, serves as a reminder of Freiburg's beginnings. In 1019, the House of Zähringen erected a castle on the hill overlooking what would later become the city of Freiburg. Approximately one hundred years later in 1120, Freiburg was officially recognised as a city and began expanding beyond the old city centre.
