Dirk Görtler immersed himself in the study of art and graphic design for almost a decade. Ever since, he's enjoyed a successful career as a freelance illustrator and graphic artist, designing book covers and providing illustrations for many publishing houses in Germany, Switzerland and the USA. His art has also been exhibited in galleries and other cultural institutions. Originally from Freiburg, Görtler has taught at several of Baden-Württemberg's leading colleges for design, digital media and music, including hKDM Freiburg. In the 1990s, he served as co-editor of Chelsea Hotel: A Magazine for the Arts. His passion project is the ILLU festival, a biennial celebration of illustration, highlighting artists from the Freiburg region. Görtler joined the English Department's faculty in the fall of 2018 to share his expertise in pop culture with our students in his seminar History of Pop Culture – Music, Art, Literature, Architecture, Design, Comics, Film, Lifestyle.
