This is a cultural studies and linguistics study trip organized by Prof. Barbara Korte and Prof. Christian Mair, complementing their joint lecture, “United Kingdom – Divided Society: Britain at Brexit” in the 2019 Summer Semester. Liverpool and its surroundings will enable us to study the past and present of a northern English industrial city which has also played an important part in Britain’s imperial expansion. Our time in Wales will be spent exploring the distinct linguistic and cultural heritage of this part of the United Kingdom. In addition to visiting sites of cultural interest, we will meet with local experts and academics who will give us their perspectives on issues of culture, class and language.

The dates of the trip are: Sunday, July 28 – Friday, August 2, 2019

(Arrival in Liverpool Sunday morning; departure from Cardiff Friday afternoon)

We can accommodate a maximum of 25 participants on this trip. Priority will go to master’s students in the British and North American Cultural Studies (MIBNACS) and English Language and Linguistics (MELLing) programs, but we do invite other students to join us. Judging from previous experience, we are optimistic that we will be able to subsidize about a third of the costs through donations from sponsors.

If you are interested in going on this trip, please let us know via emails to BOTH sekretariat.korte@anglistik.uni-freiburg.de AND claudia.kohler@anglistik.uni-freiburg.de, and join us for the initial info session on Monday, December 3, 2018, at 6 p.m. (sharp) in KG IV, Room 4008.
