On October 18, we will be celebrating the launch of a new research group, New Media – New Ways to Travel (Neues Reisen – Neue Medien), funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. The interdisciplinary program is focused on the intertwining of current travel experiences – from new forms of pilgrimage, to urban tourism, to dark tourism – with medialized forms ranging from books to blogs, and will support doctoral and postdoctoral projects on these topics. Some of the questions that the research group will explore are: How do people currently travel? What experiences do they have? What representations of travel can be found in the media? How do travel practices and media influence one another?

The program is organized by the following University of Freiburg professors: Prof. Dr. Barbara Korte (English Literature), Prof. Dr. Michaela Holdenried (German Literature), Prof. Dr. Markus Tauschek (Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology) and Prof. Dr. Tim Freytag (Human Geography). They come from a wide background of fields, with research focusing on aspects of travel and travel writing.

To further explore the symbiosis between travel and media, the research group has forged partnerships with more than ten external organizations, including the Freiburg and Baden-Württemberg tourism and trade fair boards, the travel-literature research unit at the State Library in Eutin (Schleswig-Holstein), the New Media Center at the Freiburg University Library, and the German Fairy Tale Route. Working with these partners allows the research group’s graduate students to gain professional and practical experience, paving the way for careers outside of academia.

To mark the launch of the research group, we are holding two guest lectures:

  • Prof. Dr. Barbara Schaff (English studies, University of Göttingen), "Vom Cicerone zum QR-Code: Geleitetes Reisen vom 18. Jahrhundert bis heute"
  • Prof. Dr. Axel Walter (travel-literature research unit, State Library, Eutin), "Alte Medien – früheres Reisen"
