The University of Freiburg’s English Department is renowned for its high-quality professors and diverse course offerings, and has consistently been ranked as one of the best English departments in the nation by the Centre for Higher Education (CHE). We are the second-largest department in the university’s prestigious Faculty of Philology, with around 1500 students enrolled in our undergraduate and graduate degree programs for English linguistics, literature and cultural studies.

Our standout teacher education program, newly restructured into the bachelor’s/master’s model, attracts students from across the country. We also offer a general three-year Bachelor of Arts as well as three international Master of Arts programs that enable students to specialize in their chosen field. All of these programs additionally include courses designed to help students hone their oral and written English skills.

Our department has a strong research focus as well, and we provide multiple pathways for pursuing doctoral or postdoctoral studies, here or at our many affiliated research centers. In fact, we have a nation-wide reputation for producing up-and-coming professors.

A full calendar of social, cultural and intellectual events complements our academic offerings. Theater performances by our own drama group, the maniACTs, guest lectures, parties organized by the student council, and holiday celebrations are just a few of the events that take place throughout the academic year. We regularly collaborate with the Carl-Schurz-Haus (the Freiburg German–American Institute) to bring you political talks, film screenings or book readings.

We have close international partnerships with other universities and research institutes throughout the English-speaking world and beyond, opening up many options for studying, researching and teaching abroad. The international reputation of our department is also bolstered by the University of Freiburg’s many international agreements, including with 150 universities worldwide, so our students are spoilt for choice when deciding where they want to go on exchange. The university’s membership in the European Confederation of Upper Rhine Universities (EUCOR) also gives them the opportunity to attend classes at the other universities in the Dreiländereck tri-border region of Germany, France and Switzerland, significantly expanding their course options.

The English Department is located in the historic KG IV building on the university’s main campus. Lecture halls and classrooms, the University Library, and the main cafeteria (Mensa) are all just steps away. Being surrounded by countless student cafés and pubs and the always-buzzing university courtyard makes for a unique campus atmosphere right in the heart of Freiburg’s old town.
