Your Fachschaft
What the heck is a Fachschaft?
As your Fachbereichsvertretung (departmental representatives), we take care of you, the students of the English Department. That doesn’t mean we make you soup when you’re sick, though; we’re your first point of contact if you have questions or problems concerning your English studies, and we represent your interests in communication with the department and the university administration. Furthermore, we’re your representatives in various areas of student government, e.g. in the university’s Studierendenrat (student council) and in the Philological Faculty’s Fakultätsrat (faculty council). To ensure campus social life doesn’t get neglected, we also organize various events, e.g. during first-year orientation week.
What we do
Fachschaft meetings
During the semester, the Fachschaft usually meets Wednesday at 18:00 c.t. in our room in the AStA-Haus, Belforstr. 24 (second floor). English students are always welcome to join us – just write us an email!

Ersti-Woche & Ersti-Hütte
In the week before the winter semester starts, we organize communal activities for first-years, like scavenger hunts, pub crawls, hangover brunches, or hikes.
Every winter semester - except during pandemics - the Fachschaft also organizes an Ersti-Hütte, a weekend trip for first-semester English students. For three days, we rent a cabin (Hütte) in the Black Forest and plan games and other activities to give you the opportunity to get to know each other and us in a relaxed, fun environment.
Fresher's week 2025:
- Sunday Walk
October 5, 2025: 3pm (Meeting point: main entrance of KG IV)
Need some fresh air? Join us as we take a walk around Schlossberg! Pack some snacks and drinks and get to know your fellow students :) (duration 2-3 hours)
- Pub Crawl: Downtown (18+)
October 7, 2025: 6:30pm (Meeting point: ramp behind KG IV)
Join us as we explore the vibrant pubs of Freiburg in a pub crawl downtown. Please sign up beforehand by sending us a mail including your full name at erstiwocheanglistik@gmail.com until 3pm that day. Please make sure to bring enough cash, an ID and a student ID and / or a certificate of enrollment.
Just for your information, it would be good to order at least one drink in each pub, it doesn't have to be alcoholic.

October 8, 2025: 3pm (Meeting point: ramp behind KG IV)
Explore Freiburg's landmarks, solve puzzles and get to know your fellow students as you walk through Freiburg*s historic old town
- Pub Crawl II: Stühlinger
October 9, 2025: 6:30pm (Meeting point: ramp behind KG IV)
Join us for our second pub crawl through Stühlinger. Please sign up beforehand by sending us a mail including your full name at erstiwocheanglistik@gmail.com until 3pm that day. Please make sure to bring enough cash, an ID and a student ID and a certificate of enrollment (either printed out or on your phone).
- Hangover Breakfast
October 10, 2025: 10am (HS 1224)
Hungover from the previous night out? Have breakfast with us the morning after! You'll also be meeting some of your future tutors and professors there.
We'll meet at 10am, the room is the HS 1224. Please bring your own dishes and cutlery.

Pub Quiz
We're currently hosting a regular virtual pub quiz. All students of the English Department are warmly invited to join us! If you want to play, just join the quiz’s ILIAS room, always published in our ILIAS folder shortly before the quiz starts.

Fachschaft Anglistik meets Alan McSmith
On the evening of April 5, Alan McSmith was invited by Gert Fehlner to visit the Fachschaft Anglistik at the English Department.
McSmith, wilderness guide, elephant expert, and TEDx speaker from Botswana, showed numerous photos and souvenirs from the wilderness and talked with the students about leadership in nature, while also discussing Western conceptions of life. As Smith writes in his profile about our shared evening, "learning institutions are so vitally important in the paradigm of change and disrupting our flawed consumptive systems. But what good is a system change if it is not accompanied by a change in consciousness?"
The Fachschaft would like to thank Gert Fehlner for making this interesting evening possible, and is also grateful for the many years of cooperation on Gert's anniversary at the Department!
