GeKo – Gemeinsame Kommission der Philologischen und der Philosophischen Fakultät
The GeKo (Gemeinsame Kommission) is the central examination office responsible for students in the English Department (among others). On the GeKo's website, you can find your Prüfungsordnung and your Studienverlaufsplan, as well as general rules and regulations for your degree program.
Prüfungsordnung
Your Prüfungsordnung (PO) is the guiding document for your time in the department: primarily, the PO will help you determine which courses to register for and when.* Furthermore, it provides information concerning which courses are Prüfungsleistungen (PL = graded) and which are Studienleistungen (SL = pass/fail), as well as how many ECTS points you must earn for a given course.
*The provided degree plan is a recommendation based on optimal circumstances, not a necessary requirement.
Peculiarities:
SURVEY LECTURES
Please note the following changes from the information provided in the PO:
- Survey of English Literature will only be offered during the Winter Semester (and must therefore be completed in semester 1, 3, or 5).
- Survey of British and Postcolonial Literature & Survey of North American Literature will only be offered during the Summer Semester (and must therefore be completed in semester 2, 4, or 6).
OPTION INDIVIDUELLE STUDIENGESTALTUNG & ERGÄNZUNGSBEREICH
If you wish to enroll in a course which isn't listed under the relevant module on HISinOne, please contact the academic coordinator in order to discuss the possibility of registering for course credit under individuelle Studiengestaltung (2-HF-B) or in the Ergänzungsbereich (B.A.).

Please register for the alternative Zoom tutorials only if you're completely unable to participate in person. Your Prüfungsleistung in this course also functions as your Orientierungsprüfung.
The lecture Introduction to Literary Studies is, as you'll see in the Studienverlaufsplan, generally held during the 2nd semester. However, considering that this lecture is also accompanied by a corresponding tutorial, we decided to alter the Studienverlauf to offer Introduction to Literary Studies in the winter (and Introduction to Cultural Studies in the summer) in order to ensure the best chance of holding tutorials in person. You can find the lecture online on the learning platform ILIAS.
You can enroll in lecture courses for the Winter Semester 2020/21 up to and including November 1.

Registration for Foundation Courses
Registration for the Foundation Courses takes place exclusively from 26.10. – 29.10.2020 at 12:00.
During the registration period, please register for up to three groups, ordered by priority, of Grammar and Writing AND Speaking English. Please only indicate groups that you'll be able to participate in. If, due to scheduling conflicts with other courses or external commitments, please let us know as soon as possible via email, at studienkoordination@anglistik.uni-freiburg.de.
Available slots in the different groups will be distributed on Thursday, 29.10. by 15:00. If you've been admitted to both courses – i.e. Grammar and Writing AND Speaking English – please deregister one of the courses by Friday, 30.10. at 12:00. (Unfortunately, HISinOne isn't clever enough to take care of this automatically.) Students who have missed the normal registration process or who wish to register for a different course as originally indicated may update their registration one last time between 29.10. at 15:00 and 30.10. at 12:00. The final allocation period is the afternoon of the 30th.
TL;DR:

Registration for Tutorials
You can register for the tutorials accompanying introductory lecture courses during the same time period as registration for the Foundation Courses. And just as with the Foundation Courses: if, due to scheduling conflicts with other courses or external commitments, please let us know as soon as possible via email, at studienkoordination@anglistik.uni-freiburg.de.

AK Ersti | ErstiSpace
Parallel to this year's Orientation Week, the student-led AK Ersti will offer a digital help service and an online space for first-years.
On multiple platforms, the Arbeitskreis will offer an online point of contact for first-years seeking assistance from more experienced students. This support can help first-years not only to manage the complications of starting their studies during the pandemic, but also to deal with experiences of peer pressure, discrimination, or fear/anxiety, e.g. concerns about not being able to meet new peers.
The goal of the AK is to be there for first-year students, able to listen and, if necessary, to direct them to relevant contacts.
